Take three or four of me
into the room where they keep

the tails.
One will shut her eyes, of course,

and trip first over alligator,
then buffalo.

One will put out her hand, set
them swaying in their tidy rows,

looking for a donkey’s with a pink
bow. You know.

And one
will try them on.

Peacock is just
for a laugh; she knew it didn’t match

her cheekbones. Raccoon is too bushy.
Orca, kangaroo, and camel

each have advantages over
stoat, tapir.

See here: black
panther suits all occasions.

If she hedges, tell her
you have never known anyone dissatisfied

with tiger
for a tail.
